Rainy Day

     This morning I stopped by the new Canadian fast food chain called Tim Horton's. Currently there are about 12 new locations around the city and Canadians say it's the best coffee. Of course, I had to see for myself. Even though the line was out the door and the weather was so muggy, I decided to wait it out. I was pretty glad I did because I have to say the french vanilla coffee may have been better than Dunkin' Donuts. Maybe that's why the line was out the door...

   I finally got to figuring out what I am going to be talking about for my intern presentation on Monday. I spent most of my day putting together information and examples. I am hoping to make mine as interesting and funny as possible. I'm pretty excited because offered to help me out with the whole thing. That's pretty nice given she is working on like 100 different things and with some pretty huge clients. 

   Courtney went home today because she is really sick. She was stuck laying on her mattress in our tiny dorm all day with a fever. Her mom came around 7 and picked her up and brought her home. I feel bad because tomorrow is her intern party on a huge yacht. Hopefully she'll be able to make it...even though the theme is trailer trash! What a horrible theme for an 8 million dollar yacht. 

 Walking home from work I made a quick detour to cupcake stop. It's a truck that you can follow on twitter to see where their daily location is. They finally parked in midtown. I got key lime, rocky road, and strawberry shortcake. Each was $1 and about two bites. They all were good, but I thought the key lime was pretty tart. What's smart about cupcake stop is the fact that they change their flavors everyday. 

Best Milkshake of my Life?

    Take a look at this thing:

  I traveled over 40 blocks for this thing on my hour lunch break today. The toasted marshmallow milkshake at Stand. Topped with two toasted marshmallows (go figure) it was like drinking the best part of a s'more. Chunks of marshmallow and whipped cream served as part of my lunch today. The other part? Burger soup. 

   Definitely not as fulfilling as the heavenly shake, especially since the name "burger soup" gave me an entirely different image. Since when did a burger have pasta in it? My idea of burger soup would be a beef broth, bits of ground meat, bacon, cheese, and bread. Luckily, Stand makes up for their false advertising with their campfire milkshake.

     

   When I am not obsessing over food, I am actually doing some work! These past two days I have had to update a lot of new campaign stuff for my boss and some of the creatives. I also had my last Q&A session today with the head of DDb Brand strategies. In other words, she comes up with how to market a product, the tone it should set, and who they should be advertising to. It was pretty interesting especially since anthropology plays a big role in advertising. That's something I never really would have thought of.    After work today I headed up near Times Square to a food panel Q&A session that I signed up for through ed2010. If you want to go into journalism that is the best site in the world. 

   The panel had 5 editors who work with Everyday with Rachael Ray, Food Network Magazine, Saveur, Time Out NY and Delish.com. There were about 25-30 college aged students there. It was great to get some insight on how to break into the food writing world. Listening to them speak about what they do makes me want to go into food journalism even more. I am pretty sure I am going to start a restaurant review blog for Harrisonburg when I get back. That blog probably won't have readers on the edge of their seats (like this one does -ha!) but a blog looks great during an interview. 

   Forgot to mention that last night as a bit of an Ireland reunion for me. Joey, Emily and her friend came to midtown after I got out of work and we went to an Irish pub to get some dinner. After my hearty shepherds pie and pint of Smithwicks, we walked about 20 blocks to a bar called third and long. We hung there for awhile and Emily's friend even won a round of beer bingo. Guess I don't need to mention that the bar was not the classiest. Still fun though! It's always great to reminisce about Ireland! 

   I am looking forward to next Monday too. Of course it has something to do with food. Two of the girls I work with suggested we go out to dinner to this great Mexican restaurant called La Esquina. One of the girls made reservations today thanks in part to her amazing connections. Apparently it's a pretty hard restaurant to get reservations at because a good amount of celebs have been seen there or mentioned it. I remember Kelly Ripa said something about like back in December. It's a little corner run down deli, but if you go through a door that says "staff only" and down the stairs it is actually a really nice restaurant -- you would never know! Minus the whole presenting to the CEO on the same day, I am still looking forward to Monday!

 

Finally a Doughnut Trip!

    After work yesterday one of the interns put together a lil shindig at his apartment. Yes, he is living in an apartment, not a dorm. He lived in the upper east side and was staying in his friends parent's place. The parents live in the Hamptons during the summer. The place was huge with a staircase, hardwood floors, and crown molding. We pretty much just hung out, talked and had some drinks. I took the subway home with my friend around 2:30 in the morning and even then the subway has a good amount of people. I have to say New York is a really safe city.   

    After deciding last second to stay in NY instead of NJ,  I made my way to Doughnut Plant. Of course, going there involved me switching trains and whenever that happens it means I have to get lost. Somehow I ended up in Brooklyn and was about 30 min late meeting Jenna. I spent about an hour trying to get to the Plant when if you really think about it, it's only 5 miles away from where I live. The hour trip made me put it more into perspective. It would be like me going from Yorktown to Richmond for a donut. 

         But, luckily the donuts were worth the trip. I got banana pecan and tres leche. The tres leche actually had a filling, but it was still in the shape of a normal donut. After the deliciousness, I walked around with Jenna through Chinatown and I finally saw the Brooklyn Bridge. I plan on walking it next week. 

 

      When I got back to midtown I walked down to 2nd ave. and saw there was a huge market going on. I got some nice nailpolish, kettlecorn, and cupcakes. Obviously the market had a lot of random stuff. 

      I went on a long run during the evening along the East River Greenway. It was so pretty running right along the water. There is so much to look at when you go on a run in NYC. There were dog parks, bikers, people flying kites, sightseeing tour boats, and crazy homeless people. Ohhhh New York. 

Less Than 3 Weeks Left!?

So, dessert hour was great. It ranged from chocolate pie to jello soaked in vodka. Alcohol played a big role for us interns during the hour because Jason, one of the creatives, gave us all a 40 -- and expected us to drink it all. That didn't work out for me or Melanie, but the other intern finished it surprisngly fast.

That night I met up with my brother and his coworker and we enjoyed a fancy dinner at Le Cirque. I'll admit I enjoyed the other fancy restaurant, Metrazur, better -- but Le Cirque was still a great experience. I swear I have pics of all the food I am getting at these places, I am just waiting for Scott to post them! Well, here is what I ordered:
-Spring Pea Soup with Bacon
-Diver Sea Scallops w/ shiitake, barley and turnip
-Creme Brulee

Turns out Regis Philbin was in Le Cirque that night too, but we didn't get to see him. I feel like we were put in the nosebleeds of the restaurant. I'm sure they knew we were there for the discoutned menu.

Wednesday we had another intern event. It involved us rating ourselves when it comes to our skills. It was suppose to give us a better understanding of our strengths and weaknesses. I guess it kinda helped?

After work Melanie and I went for Indian food! I figured I would continue living on the edge when it comes to my food choices. We got some crazy stuff and by the end of the meal I couldn't feel my tongue. The guy running the restaurant was a little creepy too.

Yesterday we had 2 intern events so it really made the day fly by. We got a tour of the design studio on the 6th floor which I have decided it is where I now want to work. I think I have changed my hopes of a future occupation about five times this summer. The design studio is super modern and is lined with all huge mac computers. When we went down one guy was working on retouching Hayden Panettiere for a Neutrogena ad. They were taking out the lines in her neck, fly-away hairs and her tattoo. The guy giving us the whole tour was so nice too. "Come back whenever you guys want! You can just sit next to an artist and watch them work!" So, Melanie and I are going to do that next week.

Next we went to "cool dry place" which is the video studio. They showed us how they made the Lipton Iced Tea commercial from start to finish and how much it can cost -- which is a lot.

A few hours later we had a lecture from a visiting professor who talked about consumer related marketing. In other words, any company that attaches itself with a cause to make a profit (i.e. Avon teamed up with Susan G. Komen). It was weird because I felt like I was in class the whole time but the topic itself was really interesting.

Yesterdays weather was HORRIBLE. It down poured the entire day and was windy. I had to wear a jacket! We were going to go out, but seriously the weather was like it was November. Instead, Court and I went to Serendipity and got a frozen hot chocolate. Even late at night we still had to wait to get a table!

Around midnight last night our fire alarm went off. It was so loud and the guy in the lobby made an announcement over our intercom: "Please remain calm. There is a situation going on in the lobby." Obviously that announcement just made everyone more nervous. About five minutes later fire trucks pulled up outside our dorm. Then the guy comes over the intercom again: "It was a false alarm. Sorry for the inconvenience." Still, Courtney and Lindsay were really nervous and kept saying we should go down to the lobby. I refused to walk down 26 flights of stairs and back up again. Instead, Courtney texted the RA on duty saying, "Hi, this is a 26th floor resident and I am nervous." The response back from the RA, "Why are you nervous?" And Court writes back "Because of the fire alarm and fire trucks." At this point I am in bed saying, "Courtney stop! The RA is going to think you're so weird." Instead, Courtney texts "Which RA is this?" The RA says who she is and asks who she is texting. Trying to be funny Courtney writes, "This is Katie Hudson." Great, I thought, this RA probably thinks I am such a baby (sorry Courtney).

When Courtney told me she sent the message saying it was me texting her I decided to get her back. I forgot to tell her that when we went to Le Cirque the other night her appetizer had trippa in it. I didn't know what trippa was until the next day when Melanie let me know. What is trippa you ask? The lining of a cows stomach.

When Courtney sent the text I turned over in bed and said "Oh yeah, well the other night at dinner you ate cows stomach...sweet dreams" and I turned back over onto my pillow. She shot up from her bed "WHAT!?? No. No you're kidding right!? I didn't eat it even! Right, Katie?! I didn't eat it!! WHY wouldn't you tell me?" At this point I am hysterical. "KATIE! NO! OH MY GOD I think I am seriously going to throw up." She went on trying to convince herself that she didnt eat it for about 5 minutes. Finally she laid back down and about every other minute I could hear her whisper to herself, "oh my god, no." That will show her to mess with me!!!

OK back to work!

Finally Posting

Woah, so it's been a week since my last update. You've probably been continuously checking back here thinking "When is this amazing blog going to get some new stuff!?" THE WAIT IS OVER!

So, I guess I last left off right before my night at Rock of Ages on Broadway. The show was actually very good (and funny) and it turns out a JMU alum produces the show. It ALSO turns out that I have interviewed that JMU alum for Madison magazine. Small world.

I am trying to think back on what exactly I did last week after the show. On Thursday when Melanie and I were heading home from work all of Park Ave. was closed off with tons of cops. Note: I also saw Jill's daughter from Real Housewives of NYC. I purposely sat right next to her on the subway. So, I mean Obama AND reality tv star's daughter!? They pretty much go hand-in-hand.

Of course for the rest of the week I worked the normal hours and on Thursday night we headed downtown to Mercury Bar. Lindsay's friend put our names on the list so from 9-10 all the drinks in the bar were free. Crazy but true. Then Courtney, her cousin and I headed to Hudson Terrace. It's a rooftop bar and once you get in you have to take an elevator up. You don't press the buttons though, there is someone whose job is to specifically push the buttons for your floor. It was really pretty and not too crowded. A cranberry and vodka though was $13. Yeah. Needless to say I sipped that drink like no other. Courtney somehow managed to meet the owner and he ended up buying us shots. Shots aren't my thing but hey, a free drink is a free drink!

Friday I had my usual day at work but we did have a Q&A session with one of the CEOs and President of DDB. I was the first to introduce myself when we went around the room and after saying I went to James Madison University he goes, "Oh, yeah, that's in Washington right?" I smiled and said "Oh, well no actually it's in Virginia." And he just goes, "Oh yeah, close." I liked his sense of humor. And he is good friends with the president of J. Crew! I was jealous.

That night we met up with Ashleigh in the city since she had some work here that day. We headed to our dorm and gave her that .02 second tour of our apartment. We then headed to Grand Central Station where I made reservations at Metrazur. It's a pretty fancy restaurant that overlooks Grand Central -- great if you love to people watch. We were there with the intentions of ordering off the restaurant week menu but for $9 more you could get a bottle of wine off their prix fixe menu. My meal was as follows (and pics will be posted soon):

- RISOTTO NERO DI SEPPIA, WOOD OVEN ROASTED PRAWNS, SMOKED PAPRIKA SPICED BABY ZUCCHINI, LEMON FROTH
- In other words, squid ink risotto. Sounds gross but it was delicious.
-PAPARDELLE "TEN HOUR VEAL" PAPPARDELLE, CARAMELIZED PORCINI, FAVA BEANS, PARMESAN FOAMVEAL CRACKLING
- Really just shredded veal stroganoff
-COCOLATE DUO MILK CHOCOLATE AND PEANUT CRUNCH PAVE, WHITE CHOCOLATE ICE CREAMBLACK CURRANT CHUTNEY
- Gave me the worst heartburn of my life, but well worth it.

After dinner with Courtney, Ashleigh and Scott, the girls headed to Brass Monkey and met up with Lindsay and her friends. Brass Monkey was so crowded and hot that we ended up leaving around 12:30.

The next morning we headed to Washinton Square Park and went to Peanut Butter Co. The place serves all types of PB&Js. I got the Elvis which was crunchy peanut butter with bananas and BACON! Yes, bacon. I was feeling daring after my squid ink risotto the night before. It was surprisngly good but I could only finish half.

We walked around SoHo and then over to Greenwich Village area. For dinner we went to Risotteria which serves about 30 different kinds of risotto. I had feta, spinach and roasted red pepper risotto.

That night we went uptown to a bar called the Stumble Inn. This bar is actually owned by a few of the other bars we've been to (i.e. Down the Hatch, Off the Wagon). They have pretty good prices and a more relaxed college type setting. Courtney's friends from NJ were in town for the night so they met us there. A little later we headed across the street to Brother Jimmys. We made a stop into Southern Hospitality (Justin Timberlake's restaurant) but I was really disappointed. It reminded me more of something along the lines of if Cracker Barrel decided to have a bar.

Sunday we all went down to Canal street where I attempted to bargain for knock off designer merchandise. Now I have a pair of "ray bans" -- if you catch my drift.

We finally got some down time and headed to Central Park to relax a little. And then Ashleigh sadly caught her bus home. Courtney and I split a cab with her to Penn Station and I went home to Court's house for the night. It was so nice to get some home cooking and a nice big comfy bed to sleep in. That morning her mom packed us breakfast and lunches in brown paper bags for work. I felt like I was going to school!

Today I had another Q&A session (2 hrs!) with lunch served after. I actually had to come into work early today to get some stuff done since I had to present to my boss. Pretty scary stuff. I may have to be in on a conference call with her and the client when she is in DC.

I also found I have to present in the next two weeks to the CEOs of DDB. It's scary to think about -- more so because I have absolutely no clue what I am going to say. I don't really think a presentation to CEOs of a huge ad agency is something I can wing either.

Tonight Greg is going to be in town so he will be joining a few of us for another restaurant week outing. It's a French restaurant called Le Cirque. It is suppose to be amazing.

I am pretty excited right now though bc in about 15 min we have Dessert Hour. Once a month a guy in creative sets it up so all the employees bring in a dessert dish but it has to keep with the theme. This months theme: Summer.

I would contribute to this but I don't have an oven. I will contribute by taste testing them all instead.

Weekend in Review

Going to try and keep it short since I already wrote a similar post before it was deleted. Thursday evening I met up with a few interns and we headed over to Blockheads for some Mexican food and cheap drinks. I ended up leaving around 8 to make sure I was home in time for Emily and Amanda's arrival! They got in around 10 and I showed them my dorm room..given the space that took about .2 seconds. They gave me my birthday gift which was a HUGE wine glass with 21 airplane bottles inside.




Getting ready in the morning I thought was going to be a huge pain since it was going to be 5 girls trying to get ready in one bathroom. It actually was not bad at all and we all headed out around 9. I headed to work while Emily and Amanda headed downtown to see the Statue of Liberty. I didn't get out of work till 5ish so I ended up meeting them at H&M. We headed back to the dorm and got ready for a promotion tour for Pepsi Max that Court's company was working on. We really went to go see Kim Kardashian but she didn't show up for like 2 hrs, and when she did she slipped by right behind us and went into her hotel. Sneaky! I am now boycotting her stupid show. She has no talent anyways.

After that we headed over to Pop Burger which has the most amazing french fries ever. Then we headed down to the Brass Monkey bar. Expensive drinks but a really cool place.

Saturday morning I took them down to Greenwich and we ate at Palma, the place I have been dying to eat at. The food was AMAZING. I got homemade fettuccine with a mushroom sauce and homemade sausage.




I then took them down to SoHo which of course was packed. After doing some shopping we headed back and got cupcakes at crumbs. The amount of cupcakes in that store is overwhelming. I got funfetti (L), Amanda got butterfinger (center) and Emily got chocolate covered strawberry. Since Greg took them to the bus stop in DC and picked them up, they got him a hostess cupcake from Crumbs.





We got ready to go out for the evening and headed up to Times Square. We also ate at a family style Italian restaurant called Carmines. Even at 10 at night the place had a wait. The penne alla vodka made it worth it though. We went down to a college bar after our meal called Down the Hatch. It had beer pong tables, a foosball table, and even a porch swing in the bar.

Sunday we all went to Serendipity and got the famous frozen hot chocolate. I was thinking it would be served in a mug, but no, it was like drinking from a bowl. So good though. And yes, at this point in the weekend I have gained roughly five pounds.





We also walked around Dylan's candy bar and up through a French Market. I took them over to Central Park and into Bergdorf Goodmans. Amanda even tried on a pair of Christian Loubitons --they were $735. Before I knew it it was already time for them to catch their bus home. I think they had a really good time though and it was so nice to spend my weekend with them!! :-)




After they left I took a run around central park and finally found the Zoo. I also found the fountain that is in the opening of "Friends." There was some kind of rollerblade dancing party going on in the park too. You really can never get bored there.

Last night Courtney, her friend from home, Lindsay and I all went out to Off the Wagon. On Monday nights they have $1 drafts. Of course all the good beer on draft didn't apply. I was stuck drinking Bud Light. Ehhh.

I just got out of a competitive meeting at work which was pretty interesting. I always feel realy legit when I am in a meeting and taking notes. Most of the information is really over my head though. I usually sit in on these meeting like a mute though. I feel like if I said something they would just be like "Who does this intern think she is!?"

Going to see Rock of Ages on Broadway tonight. The dorm offered discounted tix so Scott and I are going, along with a few other ppl from the dorm.

Just wrote a really long (and funny if I may say so myself) entry but stupid blogger deleted it. I will re-write later.

Almost Friday!

So I was actually busy at work these past few days. A lot of it involved researching and putting together powerpoints. Some of that was split up with our weekly Q&A sessions with the other interns. This weeks was with Spike DDB, which focuses mostly on African-American advertising. The company is actually owned by the director, Spike Lee. Turns out he was going to come in and speak to us but he had to attend Michael Jackson's memorial. The speaker who did come talk to us was great though. He was really inspirational...he'd make a good graduation speaker.

Last night Courtney and I went to see Jersey Boys on Broadway. Before hand we split a red velvet cupcake from Crumbs with cream cheese frosting. Of course it was delicious. The show itself was great -- the guys voices were unbelievable. After the show Courtney and I got a bite to eat at an Irish pub across the street from our dorm. I got a ham and brie cheese wrap. Fancy and yummy.

I am going to get drinks with the other Tribal DDB interns after work today. $3 margaritas.

Gossip Girl Monday

Work went by pretty quickly yesterday since I actually had a specific thing to work on. I made sure to take my full hour lunch break too since it was so pretty outside.

When I was coming home from work about 20 feet away from where I live they were filming Gossip Girl! I saw Taylor Momsen (the skinniest girl alive), Blake Lively, and Penn Badgely. If you don't watch Gossip Girl all these names probably mean nothing to you. But for me it was pretty exciting.

I also randomly walked into my JMU friend Dana while I was walking back from the filming. I guess she works right around the corner from where I live and I had no idea!

After making some dinner Courtney and I FINALLY made it to see The Hangover. Before the movie we loaded up on some candy from Dylan's. The movie was just as funny as everyone made it out to be.

At work today I am doing some more researching but I have a Q&A session in about an hour with the head of Spike DDB. That advertising section is actually owned by Spike Lee. Maybe he will be there.

Oh, and I am currently getting an ear infection in my other ear. excellent.

Hope everyone had a good fourth! On Friday Courtney and I went to Central Park. I laid out with her for a little while but my skin can only take so much sun. I brought my running shoes and decided to go on a run. I ended up running the entire way around park -- which turns out to be about six miles. It really didn't seem that long though because there are so many things to look at along the way. I had no idea that there was a huge pool and baseball fields in the park.

We went out to a gay bar on Friday night with Scott and his friend. It was a lot of fun because you don't have to worry about any creepy men :-) While we were there we got some cosmos too -- classy!!!

Saturday Courtney and I met up with her friend from Hoboken in Central Park. We hung out with her for a bit and then walked around the Park. We headed back to the dorm to get ready to go see the fireworks. We met up down in the lobby to go with ppl from our dorm but we didn't get the memo that in order to go you have to be really weird and annoying.

Courtney, Miranda, and I broke away from the group pretty quickly and headed down to Chelsea instead. We walked through Chelsea Market and I got some nutella gelato. Soo good. We went on to the pier and watched the fireworks from there which turned out to be a great location. Taking the subway back was a little crazy though.

Today Miranda and I headed over to a little restaurant called Alice's Tea Cup. All the decorations are based off Alice and Wonderland. I got some tea (they have over 30 flavors) and pumpkin pancakes with fresh fruit. I swear, I could eat pumpkin everyday for the rest of my life.

After our brunch we took the tram over to Roosevelt island. I think the last time I've been on a tram was when I wold go skiing. It was weird taking it during the summer --it was even weirder to think this is how people get to and from their home.

We took a bus ride around the island and walked around for a bit. It was a really pretty location but after reading more about the island I realized how creepy it is. One building used to be an insane asylum back in the 1800s but it's now an apartment building. Why would you ever want to live there?

There also used to be a prison but due to "a series of scandals" the prison was torn down. WHATT?! And there were several hospitals on the island -- one of which used to treat contagious diseases. Very weird.

After doing my laundry (such a pain) I went on a run down near the water -- right across from Roosevelt Island. dun dun dun.

Today is my Friday!

Since it's July 4th weekend, DDB offices are closed tomorrow. Yay for no work on Friday! Yesterday I had a pretty fun day at work, but today it seems as though nobody has any work to give me. The good news is I think my ear infection is slowly going way. Good timing since today is bagel day.

I think Court and I going to get some dinner out tonight. Don't know where exactly. I will keep you posted on that since I'm sure you're on the edge of your seat.

Every morning I walk by the Palace hotel and I am tempted to just walk right in and go up to the 39th floor to the executive lounge. I'm sure Nicholas (the food manager/buddy) would let me have have a few free appetizers. Here are a few more pics from the weekend.

First Day of July!

I officially and legally went out last night with Scott, Mike, Jason, Lindsay, and Courtney. It was actually Mike's 22nd birthday yesterday but he was feeling sick :-( But, being the trooper that he is, he still went to a bar with us. We went to a new place called SuperDive. It was pretty good but nothing amazing. Afterwards, Scott and Lindsay Court and I went to his boss's birthday part at a kinda swanky bar. Scott's boss does a lot of security for NYC so I'm sure he got a good deal to have a party at this nice bar. We actually got free drinks while we were there. We got back to our dorm around 1..so getting up this morning was a little difficult.

At work today I had some different projects to work on. One of the things I had to do was look for sites kinda similar to Elf Yourself. It was pretty fun research.

My ear is still killing me and what kills me more is one of my coworkers bought all these sweets as a thank you for helping her out yesterday. I actually love when she gives me work so it's not a problem at all. She got a fudge brownie, a rice krispy the size of my head, and a cookie. It's torture because the sweets are just sitting right in front of me on my desk. Looks like it's soup again for dinner tonight.
